Jack Liffey has been confined to a wheelchair, unable to walk or speak, after a freak accident that may have injured his spine. When an old friend calls to ask his help finding a missing boy, Jack's teenage daughter, Maeve, intercepts the case.
Maeve's intuition leads her to the Nickel--L.A.'s skid row--and she finds herself caught up in a battle between thugs hired by unscrupulous builders and the desperate occupants of a crumbling tenement. With Jack out of action, his partner Gloria, an LAPD sergeant comes to help.
Jack joins the battle, too, and soon everything, their lives included, hangs in the balance . . .
